the careful study of squirrel migration

How I wish the Smithsonian’s Center for Short Term Phenomena were still in existence

(house, couch, stump, in Takoma Park)
there are so many neat things in the world to study
one or two of these things even involve squirrels

I am interested in squirrel migration. Twice in the four years we have lived in our house here in Redding, CT have the squirrels disappeared for weeks. It is happening right now. I have only seen one squirrel in 2 weeks where usually there are 4-6-7 or more at the feeder we have for them.
What happens? Do they suddenly say “hey, lets go somewhere else?”. Because the other time it happened the squirrels that appeared were not the same ones.
