update: I checked with NORML, the group that the Marianas Variety reported was coming to Saipan for their annual conference, to see if the newspaper report was correct. A NORML outreach coordinator told me that the group is absolutely not holding a conference on Saipan. In the o.c.’s words: “Our annual conference is planned for L.A. We would never have the resources to hold a conference near Guam.”

But cheers to the Governor’s Press Secretary Charles Reyes anyway for providing a wonderful quote on the issue.  According to Reyes, the administration’s position on the legalization of marijuana is yet undefined, but its position on marijuana conferences is clear:

“If these people want to come here and hold the conference, then the administration welcomes them…[T]hat’s going to bring publicity to the islands. We may be covered by Fox News or CNN. Seriously, that’s free publicity.”

Serously, that’s a pretty dumb statement. Free publicity? At what cost?
