happy Saipanniversary, and adios

February 1st, 2007

It’s been five years since I turned up on this island. Five years! When I got here I was expecting to be in Saipan for one year - I came thinking I’d go back to New York (or possibly head for Florida or New Mexico or Estonia or Australia or Mexico or Iceland, you see) after the year was up.

It’s funny because my first night on Saipan, the Supreme Court law clerks - my coworkers at the time - picked me up from the airport and took me right to this bar where a good cover band was playing and a lot of long-term expats were hanging around drinking beer, and the expats all asked me how long I was out on the island for. I told them “One year” and they said, to a person, “Oh, yeah, I thought I was coming out for one year, too…”

The movers came yesterday and packed up all our stuff, and today B. and I are leaving for India for two months (I’m working on a neat article for the ABA Journal in India, and also just being a silly tourist).

I’m not exactly the best planner in the world, so I don’t really know where I’ll be in India and I don’t really know where I’ll be after India, either, for that matter. But I’m sure I’ll eventually turn up somewhere warm and interesting expecting to stay a year or two and take it from there.

Happy Saipaniversary! BTW… I love that term. Good luck in India - have fun & be safe. :)
I won’t bore you with my droll monolgue. I thought I would simply pass along my well wishes.
I may be back in the US, however, having YouTube (did you see the bait ball in Lau Lau by A. Villagomez or Mike Tripp’s filming of the Russian wedding in the grotto?!) and various Saipan blogs keeps me entertained!
No plans to return anytime soon. Too many new, wonderful things in my life to go back to the island at this time.
    All the best!
