dogs wearing clothes
November 12th, 2006
The article I wrote about two fantastic Tokyo dog stores - Water Dog Garden and George, related to San Francisco’s George - is out in this month’s The Bark.
Among these stores’ big sellers are t-shirts and other dog clothes, by which I mean clothes for dogs to wear. I hadn’t seen a lot of fashionable dogs outside of Japan, so I was pretty curious about all that, especially the why part. The owners of Water Dog Garden and George told me that dogs wear clothes for lots of different reasons: to keep the pets clean and warm and stylish, among them. I noticed when I was back in the states last month that American dogs are wearing more clothes now, too.

(you can’t 100% tell unless you’re looking closely,
but this cat is dressed in an Elvis-like denim jumpsuit
with a zipper up the front.
the cat and its owner were out for a stroll in Tokyo’s Yoyogi Park.)
Somehow, I still don’t see demin jumpsuits for cats catching on in the US.
